Sergei Bortkiewicz piano tutorials.
Late-Romantic composer and pianist from Kharkiv who wrote in the tradition of Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, and spent his last thirty years in Vienna.
About Bortkiewicz.
Sergei Bortkiewicz was born in Kharkiv in 1877 and studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Anatoly Lyadov and Karel van Ark. He continued in Leipzig with Alfred Reisenauer and Salomon Jadassohn, both pupils of Liszt, and settled in Berlin around 1904, where he began composing seriously. His first piano concerto premiered there in 1913.
War and revolution uprooted him twice. He reached Vienna in 1922, became an Austrian citizen in 1926, and stayed there teaching and composing until his death in 1952. His music never left the Romantic language he grew up with: long melodies, rich harmony, and piano writing that sits in the line of Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. Most of it is for piano.
